How Teams Qualify for the Bracket

From the Group Stage (32 teams total)

24 automatic qualifiers: - Top 2 teams from each of the 12 groups = 24 teams

8 wild card spots: - Best 8 third-placed teams across all 12 groups - Ranked by: Points → Goal Difference → Goals Scored → Fair Play

This means finishing 3rd in your group is NOT automatically elimination — you still have a chance if your record is strong enough.

Third-Place Qualification Criteria

To be one of the 8 best third-placed teams, you typically need: - Minimum 4 points (1 win + 1 draw) - Positive or neutral goal difference - Strong goals scored record

Round of 32: The New Round

The Round of 32 is the most significant structural change in 2026. Here's how the bracket is seeded:

Bracket Structure

Group winners (12 teams) face best third-placed teams (8 teams) in specific matchups based on their group position.

Group runners-up (12 teams) face other runners-up based on the bracket draw.

The bracket is designed so that: - Teams from the same group cannot meet until the Semi-Finals - Host nations are placed in separate bracket halves where possible - Top seeds are kept apart until the later rounds
