World Cup 2026 Extra Time & Knockout Rules
From the Round of 32 onward, every World Cup 2026 match must produce a winner. If teams are level after 90 minutes, extra time applies — two 15-minute periods — followed by penalty shootouts if still tied.

Extra Time Format (IFAB Laws)
- Two periods of 15 minutes each (not sudden death / golden goal)
- Halftime between periods: 5 minutes, no full 15-minute break
- Ends change at the start of extra time (same as regular halftime rule)
- Goals count toward final score and player records
- If still tied → penalty shootout
Golden goal (first goal wins) was used at World Cup 1998–2002 but abolished — modern extra time always plays both periods.
Substitutions in Extra Time
FIFA permits an additional substitution window in extra time at World Cup tournaments:
- Five subs in regular time (within three windows)
- Sixth sub allowed in extra time at recent World Cups
- Coaches often save fresh legs for minutes 105–120 when opponents tire
See full substitution rules guide — critical for 26-man squads across North American travel.
Card Carry-Over in Extra Time
- Yellow cards from regular time carry into extra time
- Second yellow in extra time still means red
- Red cards from regular time — team plays extra time with same numerical disadvantage
VAR reviews apply identically in extra time — see VAR rules.

Extra Time & the 2026 Schedule
More knockout rounds = more extra time fatigue:
- Teams reaching the final could play 120 minutes twice in the knockout stage
- Travel across USA/Mexico/Canada between rounds compounds recovery stress
- Squads with depth (France, England, Spain) gain advantage in ET periods
