World Cup 2030 is planned as a 48-team tournament — the same expanded format debuted in 2026 — with 12 groups of four, a Round of 32, and knockouts through to the final on 21 July 2030.

Full 2026-Style Advancement Rules
The 48-team format uses a 12-group, 4-team structure with an expanded knockout bracket:
Group stage (48 matches)
- 12 groups (A through L) of 4 teams each
- Round-robin — each team plays 3 group matches
- Points: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss
Round of 32 (16 matches)
- Top 2 from each group = 24 teams advance automatically - Best 8 third-placed teams (of 12) also advance — ranked by: 1. Points 2. Goal difference 3. Goals scored 4. Fair play record 5. Drawing of lots
This "best third-placed" rule means a team can finish third in its group and still reach the knockout stage — a feature that makes the final group matchday unpredictable.
Round of 16 (8 matches) → Quarter-finals (4) → Semi-finals (2) → Final
Standard single elimination from the Round of 16 onward. No away goals, no replays — extra time (2×15 min) then penalties if tied after 90 minutes.
Third-place play-off
One match between the two semi-final losers — scheduled the day before the final.

The 2030 format is expected to be identical to 2026 — FIFA confirmed the 48-team model as the new standard through at least 2030. The only twist is centenary logistics, not bracket structure.

- ELO ratings — updated after every international match; stronger predictor of knockout outcomes than FIFA ranking alone
- FIFA ranking — used as a secondary seeding input for group draw simulation
- Host advantage — calibrated uplift for Spain, Portugal and Morocco based on historical host performance (+0.3–0.5 ELO equivalent)
- Group advancement — Monte Carlo simulation of 12 groups, identifying top-2 and best-third combinations
- Knockout bracket — single-elimination tree from Round of 32 to final, run 10,000+ iterations for probability outputs
The simulator does not yet model centenary travel fatigue — a known limitation. Teams playing in South America on 8–9 June before flying to Europe may receive a slight penalty in future updates.
