Overview
The 1930 FIFA World Cup was the inaugural FIFA World Cup, the world championship for men's national football teams. It took place in Uruguay from July 13 to 30, 1930. FIFA selected Uruguay as the host nation to celebrate the centenary of Uruguay's first constitution and to honor the Uruguay national team's victories at the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics.
All matches were played in Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital, with most games at the purpose-built Estadio Centenario. Only 13 teams participated (7 from South America, 4 from Europe, and 2 from North America) due to the difficulty and expense of traveling to South America during the Great Depression.
In the final, hosts Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in front of 93,000 spectators to become the first nation to win the World Cup. Guillermo Stábile of Argentina was the tournament's top scorer with 8 goals.
