Overview
The 2002 FIFA World Cup was the seventeenth edition held in South Korea and Japan from May 31 to June 30, 2002. This was the first World Cup held in Asia and the first to be co-hosted by two countries. The tournament featured 32 teams playing 64 matches across 20 stadiums in 20 cities.
Brazil won their fifth World Cup title, defeating Germany 2-0 in the final at the International Stadium Yokohama. Ronaldo scored both goals in the final and finished with 8 goals total, winning the Golden Boot and achieving redemption after his mysterious illness in the 1998 final. Brazil won all seven matches in the tournament, becoming the first team to achieve a perfect record since 1970.
The tournament was marked by South Korea's historic run to the semi-finals, making them the first Asian team to reach that stage. Turkey finished third in their first World Cup appearance since 1954. Hakan ลรผkรผr scored the fastest goal in World Cup history at 10.8 seconds. The tournament was also controversial, with questionable refereeing decisions in South Korea's matches against Italy and Spain. Defending champions France were eliminated in the group stage without scoring a goal, while debutants Senegalbeat them 1-0 in the opening match. This was the last World Cup to use the golden goal rule.
