Overview
The 2014 FIFA World Cup was the twentieth edition held in Brazil from June 12 to July 13, 2014. This was the second time Brazil hosted the tournament (first in 1950) and the fifth time it was held in South America. The tournament featured 32 teams playing 64 matches across 12 stadiums in 12 cities.
Germany won their fourth World Cup title, defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra timein the final at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. Mario Götze scored the winning goal in the 113th minute with a brilliant half-volley. Germany became the first European team to win a World Cup held in the Americas, and it was their first major tournament win since Euro 1996. This marked the third consecutive World Cup won by a European team.
The tournament is most remembered for Germany's historic 7-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals, marking Brazil's worst defeat since 1920. Miroslav Klose scored his 16th World Cup goal in that match, breaking Ronaldo's all-time record. James Rodríguez of Colombia won the Golden Boot with 6 goals. The 2014 World Cup introduced goal-line technology and vanishing spray for the first time. Defending champions Spain were eliminated in the group stage. Luis Suárez was banned for 9 matches after biting Giorgio Chiellini. Host nation Brazil finished fourth after losing the third-place playoff 3-0 to the Netherlands, conceding 14 goals total in the tournament.
